Benvenuto a Palermo

So, it’s January 2010. What have I been doing for the past however many months? Well, after the trip to Portugal, S and I got really obsessed with the idea of going to study abroad with Erasmus. When we saw the list of universities that we could choose from, I was a bit disappointed, to say the least (University of Sussex? Oh, come on!). I knew it had to be a country with a good climate but I didn’t want to go to Cyprus or Turkey (those two don’t exactly spell out “higher education” to me) so we were left with Italy, Spain and Portugal.

When most countries have courses in English for foreign students, these three don’t. That meant whichever country we chose, we would have to study in the local language. I immediately excluded Portugal. I loved it there but the language is just too insane… And between Spain and ItalyItaly won, ‘cause it just seemed so much cooler.

After half a year of filling out all kinds of applications and forms, faxing them back and forth between universities, we somehow miraculously managed to get everything done on time and well, we are sitting happily in our apartment in Palermo right this very moment.

To reach Palermo, we had to take three planes. Tallinn-Riga-Milan-Palermo. The first plane left at 8. All my family was up at 6 o’clock to send me to the airport. My dear brother, as a farewell gift, gave me a pack of chewing gum. Yup, I sure will miss him, I thought.

So blah blah many flights blah blah Benvenuto a Palermo!

So, first impressions of Palermo

Warm. I like.

There’s so much garbage everywhere! There are huge garbage cans all over the city and they are wildly overflowing. And the streets are covered in shit… literally. It’s like Palermo has hired professional shit-spreaders who just spend all night and day buttering the streets with shit. “Oh snappp, tha streetz are wayyy to clean, we gotta spread some more shit everywhere!” And there’s just so much other random crap lying around… empty bottles, umbrellas, gloves and jackets, coathangers on trees… Or you might prefer to look at it as free stuff!! :D For example, today I saw a perfectly good pair of boots just lying next to a garbage bin. I can't imagine why someone would remove their shoes in the middle of the street and leave them lying around like that. "La la la, OMG I HATE MY SHOES IMMA LEAVE EM RIGHT HERE"

Keepin' the streets clean...

There are dogs everywhere. They’re friendly, but covered with every possible disease on this planet (except Lupus. It's never Lupus! O_O). Me and S started giving them all names. It all started with this dog we called Ottoman or Otto for short. He was fat and yellow. But very cute. :3 And now whenever we see a stray dog somewhere, we have to give it a name. I'm sure there are thousands of cats in the city too, but they don't come out much. But if you suddenly peeked under a car, you'd probably find five cats there. They are sneaky like that.

This is a lovely kitty we met in a restaurant. Can't recall her name unfortunately. Anyway, while we ate some pork and potatoes, she just rolled around on the floor... for like 30 minutes straight. I don't want to know what strange leftovers they feed her there. Oh, I remember. When the waiter cleaned up our plates, he offered them to the cat. ... O.O dayum.

What else? There are very few plants and trees in the city. I would say about 15 trees and 3 bushes (haha, just kidding… There’s probably 2-3 more, I haven’t been to the farther parts of the city yet :D). It kinda sucks. Not good feng shui I tell ya!

The traffic is as horrible as you might expect from an Italian city. All the traffic signs and lights seem to be simply recommendations. When crossing the street, there’s really only one rule: just do it! Never mind if the light is green or red, the traffic doesn’t seem to stop no matter which color the light. Most of the time the cars will slow down to let you cross… although some idiots will drive by you at 60 km/h, windows rolled down and blasting “When Love Takes Over”.

Another lmao thing is how horribly destroyed-looking some of the cars and scooters are. Almost every car has scratches and bumps. About every fourth car is missing a side mirror. A few lucky ones are missing whole parts of the car body and have wires showing and everything. But why buy a new car? Duct tape is much cheaper!

Btw, this is not a rare sight... You'll find masterpieces like this all over town

There’s constantly some kind of road work going on. One of the main streets, via Maqueda, was half-closed for a week and as a result the street looked worse than before.

Roadwork FAIL.

And on that cheerful note, we end today's lecture.

To be continued.... DUN DUN DUN

[creative title about Portugal]

Olaaa hombres!

It's a new year! 2009, the year of the ox (although our English teacher insists that it's the year of the buffalo *eyeroll*). After my final exam this semester, I had almost a full month ahead of me with no school so me and my buddy S decided to go to Portugal.
Portugal had never been very high on my list of dream holiday locations. I'm not even sure that it was on the list. But I thought, what the hell, the tickets were reasonably priced and we didn't need to book a hotel 'cause we could stay at a friends house so it seemed like a good idea.

We got to Porto quite late and didn't stay up very late but I remember the next morning very clearly. The sky was totally cloudless and the sun was shining. It was so amazing because Estonia has been under a constant cloud cover since October. And even cooler were the palm trees and orange trees that grew everywhere in the little town of Feira (where we were staying). For breakfast we went to a little cafe on our street and had grilled sandwiches with cheese and ham. Later we discovered that those sandwiches are almost like a national food because they serve them everywhere.

Although we had two weeks to spend in Portugal, we always had something to do. We had some plans beforehand about where we could go but in the end we didn't visit half of the places we planned but had twice as much fun. :)
We went to some birthday parties (it was really awkward at first but when everyone was drunk enough, we fit right in :D) and checked out some local bars (they're all quite similar - crowded and full of smoke, yuck) and hit the clubs (that didn't turn out too well but what can I say, it was an interesting experience). We even went to a football game - FC Porto vs some random loser. The game itself wasn't that entertaining, it ended with a 0-0 score. But the stadium looked awesome and the people were really excited. The Porto fanclub had these huge flags with them that they kept waving and they kept singing ... it seemed that they never got tired. It's also possible that they brought some illegal immigrants with them to sing and wave flags when they got tired. o.o

We went to Porto many times. The beach is incredible.

The river that goes through the city is awesome too but I don't have any good pics of it. S has some nice pictures of the city at night. The city looks really cool with all the bright lights and the huge river and all. Very pretty.

We went on one of those "hop on-hop off-hop wadewa" busses that give you a tour of the city. It was strange because we were the only people on the bus and we rode on the second floor of the bus and in the very front so everyone kept staring at us. D: But the tour itself was nice, they have some awesome old houses mixed with more modern buildings and of course there are plam trees everywhere. There was one shop I really liked:

O rly? Ya rly.

Another cool thing about Porto are the shopping centers. First of all, they're HUGE. Secondly, they have whole movie theaters inside them. Thirdly, they have these areas that are filled with all kinds of different cafes/restaurants but with one huge seating area. It was really cool. We could all buy different food from different places and still all sit together at one table. Brilliant. :D But yeah, usually we headed straight for McDonalds and ordered a "BigMac menu" (it was the only thing the salespeople understood and it was the only thing in the menu that we understood).
But the cinemas are totally awesome too. The one we went to was bigger than the largest cinema in Estonia... The popcorn was weird though. It was all sweet and sticky and bleh. For me it's either salty popcorn or no popcorn at all.
And the shops... ou meeeen. There were so many of them! I don't remember how many times we visited those shopping malls but we always found some cool shops to check out and I got carried away and spent all my cash in the first week lolz.

We took a two day trip to Lisbon and visited a shopping center there too. We wanted to buy some food to take back to the hotel so we could eat all night :D so went to some Selver-like thing inside the shopping center. It had this weird smell I thought. When we moved deeper into the shop I thought, damn, it smells like someone left a pile of dead fish to rot in some corner. And wouldn't you know, when we made it to the back wall where they sold fish... we found a pile of dead fish just lying around. The smell was AWFUL. It was unbearably awful. I had to cover my face and run in the other direction. It was like toxic... I felt it burning my lungs... At that moment I felt like some terrorist unit was trying out a new biological weapon or something... I can't imagine how the people who have to shop there all the time handle it. Maybe if you breathe it in for a few years, you'll get used to it. But I doubt it for some reason.
Moving on from those sharp memories lolz... We visited a sea world museum which was cool. S mentioned our friieeeeeeeeeeend. Here it is:

Yeah. It's.... I don't know how to describe it. Disconcerting.
We were just walking around the fish tank (it was really big, I'd say bigger than my house) and we took pictures of the sharks and other fish who swam there and then suddenly I saw that thing. It was swimming out from behind a corner. I thought "that's a weird fish". But as it swam closer and I saw how huge it was, I was like "ohmygod what is that thing??"
Later we read that they are usually up to 4 meters long and weight around 5 tons.
Friiieeeeeeend.

A lot of the time we just hung out at the house, watched Gs to Gents or the OC. We had a lot of fun at the house, we had time to laugh over the weird people we'd seen and all the stuff we'd done each day. Like once S saw a man walking funnily up some stairs and she thought he was just joking so she started laughing but then we understood that the guy had somekind of physical disability which made us feel really bad for laughing at him but at the same time it was totally hilarious.

One of the best things about Porto were the cafes. There were so many different cafes and they all had really good food. But one cafe shone over all the rest because of one reason...

Crepes. But not just any crepes. The most perfect crepes with dark chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. They are like a taste of heaven. OUMEEEN. I can't even look at them without drooling.

*droooooooooooooooooooool*

Sorry, where was I?

*sigh* I can honestly say it was one of the best vacations I've ever had. I didn't know or expect much of Portugal but it turned out to be an awesome place. We didn't spend too much time on boring tours of museums or castles. We saw everything we wanted to see and so much more. We had time to really see what life in Portugal is like and we had time to sleep in late. ;D And we even got a pair of pimped out shoes with our names on them! How awesome is that? :DDDD
The trip wouldn't have been the same thing without my friends so I'm really glad F invited S to Porto and that I got to tag along. We met some interesting new people and we have so many new jokes to laugh at... :D

Obrigado for reading but this is getting kinda long, so Imma stop right here.

Hell-mothafuckin-yeaaah

Friday, December 12th 2008 will go down in history as the day that I finally got my driving license! Can I get a woop-wooop? :D :D

I'm still totally flabbergasted. When the exam ended, the examination-person started listing all the stuff I'd done wrong and boy, there were quite a few of those. I was pretty much certain that she was gonna fail me. Again.
She told me that in school I would get a 3- for my driving skills but that she would still let me pass! OMFG.

And next week I'll get my license and I can start driving around all by myself :D :D It's a good thing I already bought a car like a year in advance lolz. I was hoping that I could drive it like in June already :P Too bad school is almost over so I have to wait like 2 months before I can start driving to school every day.

Lunchtime is definitely going to be more enjoyable now. It won't be "so let's go to the supermarket across the street again" but "hey, there's this great new cafe downtown, let's check it out". lawl I still can't believe it. I've failed the test so many times that it feels funny to finally have the frickin license.

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with interesting Christmas wishes. Everyone keeps asking me about it but I really didn't know what to ask for. But today I was sitting in my car (that I can finally drive legally :D) and got the perfect idea.

So my Christmas list look like this:

Dear Santa,

Here's what I want for Christmas:

- Sims K&B Stuff
- Dark Knight DVD
- That thingie that you connect to your car radio so that you can play music from your iPod in the car (except that when I say "your car radio" and "your iPod" I actually mean my car radio and iPod)

Kthx,
Paula

Guess who finally got their Dreadsteed? :D :D :D

Happy Halloween! Or whatever, we don't really celebrate it here. :D

But World of Warcraft sure does! Here's me and Zdela in our costumes :D

Now, on to more pressing issues....

I finalleh... got my DREADSTEED! WOOOOOOT! I was like the only level 70 Warlock who didn't have one... well, not anymore! :D He's one badass horse, he's got flames coming out of his nose! I would name him Flame, but that's kind of a lame name. So maybe I'll call him... Steve? I dunno yet, we'll see. :D

That's all. Carry on.

Pineapple Express

I went to see Pineapple Express today. I thought it would be an average film but it was actually really funny. There haven't been a lot of great films lately but I loved this one.

It started off quite slow but about 30 minutes in, it got hilarious. My favorite part was a car chase where one of the main characters got his foot stuck in the windshield, damn I laughed so hard at that.

I also thought it was really cool how they portrayed the drug-mafia or whatever. There were the Asian mobsters who thought they were ninjas and then the American mobsters who were all either wannabes or inapt idiots :D It was almost like a parody of a cop-movie. Anywayz, it was funny.

And there was a huge battle in the end, AK-47s were involved. I liikee. *thumbs up*

There were some weird quotes that I liked but unfortunately I can't remember any of 'em. Heehee.

And yeah, go see it, if you haven't yet. Pineapple Express has been approved by me. =D

And btw, FIY, I'm now lvl 70 in WoW. :D

Well, let me just use my Swift Warstrider :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Yeeeeehaw! I finally got the mount I wanted in WoW! I had to get 90 battleground marks of honour for it but it was totally worth it :D
Take a look at my new Swift Warstrider (and please ignore my horrible green cloak xD)

(click the pic for large version. siriusly. CLICK IT. It's vry niiiice.)

Isn't she pretty? :) I was so happy to finally have this mount, every time I mounted, I said "Well, let me just use my SWIFT WARSTRIDER :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D"

I still haven't gotten round to finishing the warlock mount quest (don't judge me! it's really difficult! XD) but I'm about 200k xp away from being lvl 70 so I'll deal with it then.
Until then.... well, I can just use my Swift Warstrider :D:D:D:D

I was looking through my wow screenshots folder and found this pic:

That's Thunder Bluff at midnight-ish. Pretty, eh? I must say WoW offers some nice views. :)
Look at all those stars!

And, um.... i'm really good at this last words thing. um... bye! *runs*
